Ode to Herefordshire Nature Trust’s Community Commons Project

December 2010 marked the end of the Herefordshire Nature Trust’s Community Commons project, which has given valuable practical and financial help to this Association and to our fellow associations looking after Commons in other parts of the county. On 25th September 2010 the Project hosted an open-air barbeque party on Hergest Ridge to bring together representatives of the different Commoners’ Associations and to celebrate the work and achievements of recent years. Our Chair marked the occasion with the following verses:

Ode to Herefordshire Nature Trust’s Community Commons Project
by Lesley Whistance, Chair of Garway Hill Commoners’ Association

Bracken was obliterating Garway Hill
And would have been there still
Had not the Project of Community Commons
Been around for us to summons.

Back in 2005 Liz and Lesley shook their heads
Something must be done they said
Ring Francesca was the sound advice
She will help you in a trice.

Rhys and Tim came on the scene
Making reality of our dream
Round our little Garway table
We made plans to do what we were able.

Rhys went back to New Zealand in a year
Leaving Tim the project to steer.
Next came Judy on the scene
Who soon became the COMMONS QUEEN.
Ably aided and abetted by our man Sam
They deal with every sort of scam.
(That should say difficulty but it would not scan)

They work together in a tiny hut
But soon their door will finally shut.
Three cheers for the Community Commons group
Who have arranged this party for the commons troop.

On our hill they arranged for the bracken to be cut
Made certain of a car park and a gate to shut
Our fencing is nearly all double
With hedge plants guarded from rabbit trouble.
Even the newts have their own hotel
Sheep and ponies graze the hill in total
Knowledge that their forage is secure
Because of the Community Commons four-year tenure.
We thank them for all the research and plans
Their practical help and the interpretation stands.

Join me if you will to make our Roger’s secret sign
Which says we have the bracken conquered just fine.
